Sense of place: Perceptions of permanent and temporary residents in Croatia

Abstract
This study analyzes the sense of place in the coastal municipality of Okrug on the island of Čiovo, comparing permanent and temporary residents. The results show that sense of place consists of several related dimensions and that the two groups differ in place attachment and place dependence. Differences among second-home owners who identify as natives or newcomers also suggest that place rootedness shapes how residents perceive and value the area. The findings inform debates and policy in spatial planning, tourism, and regional development.
